I'm very excited about how this schedule change improved my already robust program! Moving Beginning days from Mondays to Wednesdays worked well for two reasons:
1. No more missed Mondays for holidays means more days of beginning only and advanced only instruction. This did help and support each group more by providing more focused teaching on more days. YAY!
2. Having orchestra on 2 consecutive days will continue to help solidify technique and increase retention for the Beginning Orchestra students. I'm hoping that more of the students will flourish having two days in a row of classes.
It will be even MORE IMPORTANT to stress home practice with so many days off in between.
ORCHESTRA DAYS :
Tuesdays: Advanced Orchestra only
Wednesdays: Beginning Orchestra only
Thursdays: Combined Orchestra with ALL students together
The District Registration is the ONLY official registration you will complete this year.
Go to music.canyonsdistrict.org and thoroughly read all of the District information, then click continue registration at the bottom of that page. You'll enter the student number and your Skyward info autofills. IF you don't have a current Skyward email for Guardian 1, you must get that set up. Please call your school secretary to fix any issues with the Skyward information.
District Rentals will also be done online now to streamline the process. PLEASE do NOT pay for rentals unless you secure one at the District Rental event for my schools, held Sept 11 at 6:00-7:30 pm at the District office, 1st floor.

It is going to be an INCREDIBLE year in Orchestra! 2023-2024 My first year at Lone Peak Elementary and my 14th at Willow Canyon!
UPCOMING DATES and INFO TO BE AWARE OF:
Parent/Student Orientation Meeting*:
Thursday, August 31st - a 40-minute meeting to answer all of your questions and discuss procedures
Lone Peak: 7:55 am
Willow Canyon: 3:00 pm
INFORMATION TO BE COVERED AT THE ORIENTATION:
Rent or purchase an instrument. Please come to get information BEFORE doing anything about obtaining an instrument OR read info below to know how to proceed!
- District rentals are available for some instruments but are very limited in sizes and in quality. These instruments are for the people who cannot afford to rent from a music store. The $100 fee for the year can be waived. The rental fee must be paid (or fee waiver approved) before the student can take the instrument home. You are responsible for any damage done to the instrument. You know your child and how careful and responsible they are. It maybe worth the extra money to rent from a music store and get the insurance to have the peace of mind.
- PLEASE do not go to ebay, Amazon or KSL without discussing it with me! You likely get what you pay for...and it will be a bad experience for your student if they have a bad instrument that they are working against as they try to learn.
- Local stores to rent from include: Summerhays Music, Charles Liu Violins (have violas and cellos too), Riverton Music, Day Violins (located in Day-Murray Music). The nice thing about renting from a local store is that they will service it, insure it and trade up. Usually, it is a rent to own situation. Read fine print on all contracts!
- Online vendors that are reputable include: Southwest Strings, SHAR Music, and Woodwind Brasswind. You can rent or buy instruments, plus all the accessories listed below on these websites but it takes time to get them, obviously.
Accessories and method book needed - PLEASE label name and phone # on your student's music book, case, rosin and shoulder rest or rock stop!!!
- ALL instruments will need GOOD quality rosin for their bow (spend at least $7 - NOT the small boxed rosin...)
- Violins and violas need a good shoulder rest (NOT foam or material) that fits their instrument well and is comfortable. Ask for help! Try a couple of kinds. You can order them online if you prefer. Everest is the best brand for a molded model and Resonanz has a metal base with padded velvet cover (harder to find). Be sure to order the correct size if you order instead of going to the music store...
- Cellos need an end-pin stabilizer or "rock stop". Best is an adjustable strap that is secured with rings under the chair leg and end pin. This will not slide! Traditional rock stops are fine but can slide, especially after they get dirty. Lone Peak has carpet pieces that we can use too, so those students may be okay without a rock stop...unless they need it another time. ;)
- String Explorer Book 1 for their specific instrument - Please, PLEASE write the student's name in or on it!
Advanced students should already have everything they need but make sure you can find everything, please!
OPTIONAL items that are extremely helpful if there's a budget for them (need a bday or Christmas gift idea?)
- Bow Buddies or other bow hold helps: One of the biggest challenges for kids learning stringed instruments is the bow hold. These "animals" made of silicone and attached to the bow help them to feel the curve of the fingers and thumb, as well as position the hand correctly. Google them if you are interested. Amazon sells them...look for the best price! There are other options as well that might work fine and are a little less expensive.
- Tuner: you can buy an app OR a device that helps you know when strings are in tune. See my YouTube videos for more info! https://youtu.be/ykjW_aKwUJE or https://youtu.be/s65d_9wYRyw
- Metronome: This is a device or app that beeps or clicks the beats as they play. Increase tempo as they get better at songs...
- Music Stand: It is really helpful for the student to be able to see the music properly and having an actual music stand is best!
The stands are LIMITED at both schools, so please feel free to bring your own music stand if you possibly can. Each student will use their own stand for the first few months of orchestra, so we will need extras! If you would like to donate stands, let me know. That would be super helpful!!!
Tuition costs and options for payment:
- $200 is the tuition for the whole school year which can be paid in full, in two payments of $100, or monthly installments of $25.
- Pay by check or money orders (payable to Canyons District) or cash OR credit card online at https://canyons.revtrak.net
- Tuition fee can be waived if you qualify. The fee waiver form is in the online District registration. Download, fill out and then turn it into the Principal for approval.
Opportunities to volunteer! I LOVE PARENT VOLUNTEERS and you don't need to be musical! You could help out once a week or every other week and make a difference!!! I'd love to know how you would like to help...door opening, set up, sectional rehearsals, parties, belt testing, etc. Please email to let me know your schedule and when you would like to come in. I will also have sign ups to help at the orientation. Thanks to all those who have helped in the past!!!!!!!!!
[STILL UPDATING THIS SECTION...thanks for your patience!]

Musical Celebrations (parties!) I love to have volunteers to come and help! :-)
- Christmas Celebration is during orchestra on Thursday, December 14th. No orchestra after that date until January .
- End of Year Celebration is during orchestra on Thursday, May 23rd. Orchestra is over... ;(
- Belt Testing Parties will be earned periodically for our Pom Pom incentive prize. They earn Pom Poms when they play and behave well during orchestra. These parties are orchestra days when students can come and pass off their written and oral quizzes to further them along the Musical Black Belt path. Written quizzes are required for the Orange, Green, Blue and Purple belts. Practice requirements in one week are required for the Green, Blue and Purple belts. Please look below for more info on Belts!
Practicing Expectations:
- I will NOT be tracking their practice time. Please decide on a schedule that works for your family. I'm hoping they will learn to practice because they LOVE it and not because they have to do it.
- Consistent daily practicing for 15-20 minutes will help them progress well at the start of the year. As they get more advanced, the time should increase to 30-40 minutes.
- If YOU want to establish a reward for minutes of practice or songs learned, that’s great. You will notice that to earn some later “belts,” meeting a weekly practicing goal is required. There will be forms for you to fill out after quizzes are passed.
-Please let me know if your student refuses to practice...we will have a discussion and come to an agreement about it. It will be very difficult for your student to be successful in orchestra without consistently practicing at home at least 3-5 times a week! Develop a plan and make it a joyful habit!
Scheduling:
Please note the schedule of days for each school - Advanced students are welcome to attend Beginning to help! After the 2nd Recital (or before), ANYONE can attend class ALL days to have more practice! I hope some students will be able to switch from Beginning to Advanced if they work really hard! YAY!!!
LONE PEAK meets before school from 7:55-8:40 am but please arrive at 7:45 am to set up!
Tuesdays: Advanced Orchestra
Wednesdays: Beginning Orchestra
Thursdays: Combined Orchestra
WILLOW CANYON meets after school from 3:00-3:45 pm so they need to hurry into the Gym right after school to set up!
Tuesdays: Advanced Orchestra
Wednesdays: Beginning Orchestra
Thursdays: Combined Orchestra
Instrument Care and Storage:
Instruments and bows are to be handled carefully!!! They are quite fragile and a drop or bump can do some major damage. Also, excessive heat or cold is not good for them. Please don't store them near any vents or where sun damage could be a problem. Be sure they are taken carefully in and out of the car and heavy doors. Many have been damaged by leaving them out in the car in the heat or cold, or by backing over them. Literally. It happened. Heavy doors can damage cellos in cloth cases.
Rosin dust should be cleaned off your instrument and bow after each time you play. Use a soft cloth to wipe wood surfaces and strings, NOT bow hair. Bow hair should not be touched, but carefully tightened and loosened each time you play. Cut bow hairs with scissors, don't PULL it out, as this could lead to more of the hairs falling out.
School storage:
LP - store instruments in their class rooms as instructed. DO place in a safe corner where they won't be kicked or bothered.
WC - store instruments in their class rooms as instructed. DO NOT place anywhere they could be kicked or dropped. Cellos in office.
Belt Testing:
Children can earn "belts" (pipe cleaners of different colors to put on their bows, instruments or cases) by learning and demonstrating certain skills and information. Those children who were working towards black belt last year and didn't quite make it will be able to pick up where they left off, as long as they can still recall the information they passed off last year. If they can't, they may have to repeat a belt or two, but WILL NOT have to retake quizzes they already passed.
For all beginners, start memorizing your instrument's parts to pass off the white belt and you're on your way! The yellow belt is demonstrating the "rest, ready and playing positions" as well as consistently maintaining correct posture, body and hand/finger positions - our Position Check Points - on your instrument and bow. For additional belts, there are quizzes to pass, so ask for study sheets to get prepared! There are also practice requirements for several belts, so please don't put off getting all but your Black Belt done! Black belts are always awarded at the final concert! :)
Please donate prizes when you can...small toys, treats, school supplies, soda pop, jewelry, accessories, games, hand sanitizers, lip balm, etc. Anything you think kids would like would be appreciated and helpful to keep the children motivated! If you'd rather donate cash, that is fine! Thanks SO much for your support of this program!!!
ADVANCED PLAYERS, CONSIDER JOINING CANYONS YOUTH SYMPHONY THIS SCHOOL YEAR!
The District sponsors a Youth Symphony Orchestra for students 5th-9th grade. This orchestra consists of string, brass, woodwind AND percussion players who pass a basic audition.
They meet at Albion Middle School on Mondays from 4:00-5:30 pm and some Tuesdays, when there is a Monday holiday.
Performances include the Festival of Trees, Christmas and Spring Concerts as well as a concert at Abravanel Hall with all the youth orchestras in the state! It is a great group with fun conductors from some of the best middle schools in the district!
Auditions will be in September. Please check Canyons Website for more information on dates, times and requirements!!! I have a limited number of applications so let me know if you 'd like one...this is definitely for more advanced students. They are playing with mostly middle schoolers, thus a higher level of difficulty.
Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for Orchestra. Thank you for your support!
